Core Health & Fitness, manufacturer of industry leading brands StairMaster , Schwinn, Nautilus , and Star Trac, is excited to partner with the NIRSA Foundation to offer financial support to NIRSA Professional Members who wish to attend the 2020 NIRSA Annual Conference.

The 2020 NIRSA Annual Conference will be the 71st annual Campus Rec & Wellness Expo. This conference presents opportunities for attendees to find inspiration, passion and to make connections with 2,500 campus recreation students and professionals as well as over 130 exhibiting companies. At this event people will have the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of individuals that share the same excitement for the Campus Rec industry that they do. Attendees can stimulate innovative industry conversations stemming from any of the 100+ educational sessions and roundtables with experienced members of the Campus Rec community. Also available during this event is the Career Services Center, which is on-site and prepared to assist individuals in their search for their perfect job while offering numerous other career resources.

Ken Wolters, Global Education Manager for Core Health & Fitness says, “It is an absolute honor to participate in the travel grant program and play a small part in the journey of professionals in the field of campus recreation. We see this program as a conduit to true partnership and are excited to see it continue into 2020 and beyond for those we serve in the NIRSA community.”

Financial support is awarded through the NIRSA Foundation Travel Grant which allows leading NIRSA professional members the opportunity to advance their career in the field of collegiate recreation by networking and gaining valuable knowledge without shouldering the expenses of travel and lodging. This opportunity awards a $1,000 (USD) grant that is designed to cover travel expenses associated with attending the 2020 NIRSA Annual Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. This includes airfare, mileage, and hotel accommodations.

To be considered for this opportunity, applications must be submitted through the NIRSA website no later than December 3, 2019. Applicants will be notified of application status by February 2020.

Recent NIRSA Stipend winner, Erin Patchett from Colorado State University, shares her insight on how winning this grant is a contributing factor to her success. Erin’s past roles include Assistant Director of Recreation at Santa Clara University, Operations Manager for Track/Cross Country at Stanford University, and a Graduate Teaching Assistant at University of Iowa.

“I have the honor of serving on the NIRSA Annual Conference Program Committee (2019-2021) and will be the Chair in 2021. As a result of this commitment, it is important for me to attend the annual conference during each year of my term. Receiving the stipend from Core Health & Fitness in 2019 allowed me to facilitate attending both the NIRSA Annual Conference in Boston, MA as well as the National Conference on Race and Ethnicity (NCORE) in Portland, OR. Being able to attend NIRSA was vital from a learning and support standpoint given I will take the lead role in 2021.  Attending NCORE was also incredibility impactful. From a content standpoint, I learned a tremendous amount of information that I can apply to my role at CSU. From a conference planning standpoint, I was able to see how another organization operates their annual conference and I was also exposed to extraordinary keynote speakers every day of the conference – all of this is information I am taking back to my role with NIRSA’s Program Committee.

In terms of what the Core stipend program offers students and professionals, the main outcome in my mind is simply the access piece. Attending a conference requires financial support and not all schools can offer that to their staff. Having Core there to provide that support helps level the playing field, removes barriers and expands access to professional development that might not exist otherwise for many people.” – Erin Patchett, 2019 NIRSA Stipend winner.
